How to Stay Warm with a Caravan Mattress Topper in Winter

Snow, ice, wind, rain. If you’re battling the wintry elements on your travels, you want the right kit to stay warm. No one wants their toes and hands to freeze overnight or spend the night shivering. So, without further ado, let’s explore the simple hacks that can help keep you warm in your caravan.

Whether you’re planning a grand road trip to the Scottish Highlands or Scandinavia, or just despise the cold snaps in the UK, this guide will make you feel comfortable wherever you’re spending the winter.

How can I make my caravan warmer in winter?

From buying the right bedding and mattress to investing in heated products and appliances, we’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to feel cosy in your caravan from October through to March.

Insulation

Modern caravans have decent insulation. However, older caravans may need some upgrades in this department. Our tip? We recommend adding insulation to your floor, roof, and walls should you have an older caravan that’s still going strong. If you want to be super lavish, you could even invest in some underfloor heating.

Choose the right bedding

Your bedding (and your choice of pyjamas) can play a part in how warm you feel. It’s all about the materials! Blankets, jumpers, and bed socks made of wool and fleece are ideal for ramping up the cosy factor. If you prefer natural fibres, wool is a good choice. Created from polyester, fleece is still a good option as it’s warm but also breathable—the latter being a quality often-lacking in synthetic materials.

Choose the right mattress topper

With temperature control technology, your choice of mattress topper could help lock in warmth in the winter without causing uncomfortable night sweats. Memory foam is a particularly good choice as it provides a layer of insulation, keeping you toasty. The good news is that you can also use an electric blanket with caravan mattress toppers made from memory foam!

Do mattress toppers make you warmer?

Synthetic materials are known to keep you warmer, as they are typically less breathable and more insulating. With that in mind, you can be confident that memory foam is a good choice. However, if you’re worried about night sweats or how the mattress topper would feel in the summer, make sure you choose a topper that has temperature control technology and a cover made from a natural fibre. That way, you’ll experience the ideal sleeping space for summer and winter.

Use heat appliances

From microwavable wheat pouches to hot water bottles and hand warmers, there are plenty of small, affordable items you can buy to help keep you warm. However, if you want to heat up an entire space, rather than just your bed or hands, you may want to invest in a portable heater. Even having the heater on for just an hour before bedtime will help make all the difference. Hot drinks will also be your best friend, so it’s worth having a kettle and flasks.

Jump in a hot shower

Run a hot shower before bedtime to help soothe your muscles and take away the chill. If you feel up to it, a bit of pre-shower exercise is also a great way to warm your muscles, such as an evening jog at your local park, a few star jumps, a session at the local gym, or even a bit of cleaning and tidying.
