This Mattress Topper Keeps You Cool in Summer & Warm in Winter

04 Aug 2024

What temperature provides optimum sleeping conditions?

Experts over at the Sleep Charity recommend a bedroom temperature of around 16-18 °C. However, when you’re on the road, in your caravan or sleeping in a tent, the temperature becomes much harder to control! If the thermometer exceeds 24 °C, that’s when your night is likely to be restless. Why? The body prepares for sleep by lowering your core temperature, which becomes increasingly difficult to do when it’s hot and humid.

To give your body the best chance of sleep, even when it’s warm, it’s worth investing in cooling materials to sleep on. Everything from what you wear to bed to what you sleep on can make all the difference. In this guide, we’re showcasing the mattress toppers that help keep you cool and how they work.

What mattress topper keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer?

Do you run hot in the summer but struggle to get warm in the winter? If so, you may be on the hunt for a mattress topper that gives you the best of both. Below, we’ve listed some of our tried-and-tested favourites when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep (even on your travels during a hot summer or cold winter).

How does a cooling mattress topper work? Can it really keep you cool?

If you are sceptical about whether a mattress really can keep you cool, we hope this brief explanation will keep your doubts at bay. It’s all about getting more airflow and reducing the build-up of excess heat and sweat. Some are also crafted with special climate control technology that draws heat away from the sleeper.

We recommend the Slothie. The natural fibres of the bamboo cotton cover are known for their breathability and moisture-wicking properties, which help to keep you cool in the summer. The material’s structure allows for better airflow, preventing a buildup of heat, and its moisture-wicking capabilities help draw sweat away from the body, enhancing comfort.

In cooler weather, the memory foam layer provides insulation, retaining warmth to keep you comfortable.

Can you put an electric blanket under a mattress topper?

Placing underneath a mattress topper probably won’t transfer enough heat to you. Instead, we recommend adding an electric blanket between the topper and the cover sheets. That way, you’ll feel nice and toasty. Electric blankets can be set to a range of temperatures, but for the sweet spot, between 18 and 25 °C is recommended.

Other tips for staying cool in summer and warm in winter

Summer Winter
Open windows and internal doors to let air circulate. Wear fleece pyjamas and bed socks.
Turn on your fan or air conditioning. Use a fleece or wool blanket (or treat yourself to an electric blanket).
Use a thinner tog duvet (4.5 tog or 7.5 tog if you like the feel of a weighted duvet). Use a thicker tog duvet (between 7.5 tog and 13.5 tog).
Wear thin pyjama materials made of natural fibres, such as cotton. Do some light exercise before bed.
Take a cool shower before bed. Take a warm shower or bath before bed.
Open the loft hatch. (Hot air rises!) Sleep with a hot water bottle.
